Wagas

We went to Wagas to celebrate the half day.  And nothing says happiness like girl-y hipster joints.  We think Joachim was the only guy there.  He said it was because Wagas doesn't really have man meat, and thats what men want.  Men want steak, not salmon sandwiches on ciabatta.  Beers not peach-passion fruit smoothies.  But we like smoothies and we don't eat meat.  So I guess this review doesn't apply to everyone. Yes, to gender stereotyping!

We personally love Wagas.  I, Chrissy, have loved it from the first time I was here, and I got an African-themed chicken wrap ( I ate meat at that time) and crepes.  I have loved it all the times i have ordered a salad via Sherpas.  And we loved it today.  However, there are mixed reviews.  Almost every guy we know, from Chrissy's dad to our guy friends at school, think its "okay".  The place was filled, than again it was Friday at noon, with middle-age women socializing.  The decoration, tasteful  girly minimalism complete with a black and white screams stylish feminism.

Whats more important is the food.  We take it most people in Shanghai already know the food in Wagas.  Its pretty common, almost omnipresent.  If you haven't been there you really need to get out of your shell.   And while this review may not be exciting, we have all eatten hear before, one of the major things we write about is food. And then video games.  On repeat.  So exciting! Anyways...

The Strawberry Slam Smoothie (it had protein powder):

The Wagas (peach, banana, passion fruit, oats, yogurt, honey...smoothie):

The "veggie box" - half a "wagas salad" and a half falafel wrap:

The Salmon Sandwich:

Again!:

Chrissy laughing:

The food was great.   The falafel wrap, which we guess is what they are known for, hits the mark every time.  Its not too oily or too dry.  And it filled with other bits as well such as tabbouleh, roasted tomatoes and hummus.  Its one of our favorite, if not our favorite sandwich/wrap in Shanghai.  And their smoothies are delicious, some of the best in Shanghai.  After trying almost all of them, its the Wagas' smoothie which stands out as the best.  The strawberry slam smoothie was a mix of both strawberry and a bit of banana, while it seemed simple, the taste was great and refreshing. The  Salmon Sandwich was superb, it was perfectly made, and it tasted so good, especially with the selection of lettuces and smoked salmon freshly placed between two pieces of toasted ciabatta. Yes, yes, it was that good.

Basically, the food was good, and healthy-food lover friendly. Its one of those restaurants where you can go and have a nice, refreshing, and healthy lunch.  With a smoothie of course.  The service and the atmosphere are both nice.  Its a cheaper version of Slice (and so much better) and a much better tasting version of the bland and over-priced Element Fresh.  We have not yet been disappointed.  And for the price you pay, its great.  Two teenagers can afford it without feeling like they are damaging their wallets!

So with all that in mind: great food, great smoothies, great minimalistic design...we give it :
***** out of *****
And we are rather picky.
