When my plane was delayed in Jiuzhaigeo China, as well as now where my Service Center took away my DVD player (when I am recovering from surgery!) I have relied on Kimberly Snyder's book The Beauty Detox Solution. You can check out her blog here . It's worth looking at, it's much better than my blog. Plus she is so pretty and smart.

I haven't been eating so good these "recovering" days; a lot of malt shakes a lot of guacamole. My body feels gross.

Anyways, I think I am going to try to follow her detox. It's hard because I don't have a juicer one of the most basic essentials. There is a lot of her ideas which just arn't accessible in China, such as using unpasteurized miso paste in your salad (substitute kimchi), gluten-free crackers and grapeseed oil. Hell, it's even hard to find avocados in Carrefour. But there are many things that I can do! I already don't eat dairy for the most part, so cutting that out isn't a big deal. And I could always eat more vegetables!

This is the recipe for her "morning smoothie" which is an ideal breakfast.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

optional:
1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)
1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

This is a lot of food when you think about it. Like a lot of bulk. But it's blended!

Teeth - Pulled

Today I had two of my wisdom-teeth taken out, they were growing into my other teeth. Because I had only two operated on, I didn't get full anesthesia, just local. So I was awake during the whole procedure and watched everything going on. Luckily I am not squeamish, the whole operation didn't hurt much. But it hurts like hell now.

The whole thing started out with taking pain-killers, then the dentist took a really sharp needle like thing and put it in my mouth. I thought he was already cutting open my gums, but he was just numbing my tongue and mouth. Then he cut open the gums, and used a drill and a slicer to cut my teeth into quarters. Apparently, my tooth was really embedded into my bone, so this was less invasive. It was okay, I had my giant Dr. Dres ( i have the "pro") version, so I listened to lots of music. Everything from the Presets to Unkle. I think I had on Gorillaz when he actually pulled out my teeth...to much information. Anyways...

When the first tooth came out I sat up and wanted to see it, but they made me sit back down. All I ended up seeing was swabs covered in blood. In the end, I got to see my shattered wisdom teeth. They were brown, from all the medication I had to take during a very long sick spell junior year. Gross max.

I also couldn't feel my tongue/lips/mouth. So when I sat up, I was biting my lip! The dentist looked at me and goes "oh don't bite your lip" and as if I am two helps me look normal. The assistants and I laughed and laughed. I also couldn't drink water. I couldn't figure out how to open my mouth or use my tongue or swallow. That was pretty funny too.

Now I am in lots of pain in my bed. I can't do anything for the next few days. I am really bloated.

I look uglier. And odd...

ANTM - Elyse Sewell

I LOVE Elyse Sewell. I not only read her blog and cyber-stalk her but have watched ANTM cycle 1 maybe ten times since March. It is the only legit season, the rest are so stupid and corny. Since coming back to China, I typically put an episode on each night in bed to fall asleep watching. Tonight happened to be episode 5 "The Girl Who Everyone Thinks is Killing Herself" which is the most difficult episode to watch.

The other girls attack Elyse for her "eating disorder", a subplot in the show. The accusations feel like they have no factual grouding, and I sympathize for Elyse. While she is thin, her body seems to naturally fit her frame, no bones show through and her arms are round and soft. If they were unnaturally thin, wouldn't they look taunt and boney? She states she loves her body and doesn't wish to change it, get skinnier or fatter and admits she doesn't eat a lot. Naturally, she has a small frame, so her stomach is smaller. If she stated that "cake is my favorite food and I love to eat everyday" then that would be a bit more suspicions but it seems like seems to just not eat a lot. There are so many campaigns about how "curvy is the new black", and some people are born curvy blah blah. Some people are naturally thin too, you CAN be skinny without having an eating disorder. My dad was 90 lbs as a 15 year old boy.

Robin attempts again to alienate Elyse yet again, like the good Christian she is, going on and on in a group meeting about how she is comfortable with "the body God gave her". Wasn't she crying 3 episodes ago about her body and seems to always cover up her hips? This is what bothers me, when other people make go out of their way to make the person with the "eating disorder" feel uncomfortable.

Celebrities always say that "oh being called anorexic is just as painful as being called fat". I have been called both, and can tell you that it's false. BUT being talked about having an eating disorder can be just as obnoxious. When I was ill two years ago, I lost a lot of weight. Everyone from teachers, to PTSA members it seemed gossiped about my weight, and their callus tones and attitudes drove me over the edge. When I had told my friend I had eaten a cinnamon roll, she even replied "you throw it up yet" in front of my whole class. It was so petty and dumb, and I quickly got defensive of their "concern". I mean seriously? Would you ask a morbidly obese person why they are fat to their face? Would you attempt to monitor what they ate in public? No.

Hello from Shanghai

I just checked the statistics for visitor viewers...and oddly enough a lot of people are still reading this blog (??) so I might as well up date.

I'm in Shanghai, I'm taking a 12 week course at JiaoTong university. Fun stuff, there is only one other person in my classroom at the moment. And the books don't really match the one's at UW so hopefully it all goes okay. And lunch comes from the local gas station. Fingers-crossed.

I think I get done around 2-3, so I want to get a job and do a lot of hot yoga/kick-boxing.

Obsessed with Anabela Belikova. She is my epitome of beauty. Also her shoes here are fierce (I am watching ANTM season 1 at the moment). ELYSE! PAGANS! best.

This looks oddly similar to my room in Shanghai (all orange and vintage Indian) only I don't have random girls all awkward on my bed.

My final I am now taking a day early because I leave tomorrow directly to Chicago for a day.
And then I come back to Seattle for a day.
And then after less than a day I leave for Shanghai.
And then after two days I leave for Singapore.
And then after four days I leave for Shanghai.
And then after two days I leave for Seattle.
Oh.My.God.

But I wouldn't have it any other way. (:

Tomorrow I have double FINALS. In my hardest classes, math and Chinese.
Not even midterms, the real deal.
And sadly, I didn't even have a dead week to prepare the best. But whatever.
I am going to go in like Charlie Sheen and bi-win.
And if not, I am seriously contemplating becoming a butterfly farmer.
Even if I would have to live in Costa Rica and I don't know Spanish...
and would be payed around 2 dollars a month, butterflies are pretty.
Unless they are on clothing and then they are tacky.

But really, to have a green house filled with butterflies, like the one at Blenheim, would be perfect.

I really am serious.

Oh. And Kate Moss showing up to the LV runway, after her 2004 retirement from walking was the highlight of my week.
She's a national treasure, and doesn't care either way. And a badass.

Oscar Fashion - Total Fail

This is overdue.

Oh Oscars. I loved you once, when I was young.
The dresses were so good, the people so clean and the entertainment was...well...entertaining.

But this year, you were a mess.
James Franco was stoned...Anne Hathaway was cracked out (so hyper!)...
no jokes worked and there were no surprises.

However, all could have been saved if there had been one decently dressed person. Someone chic and excremental. But to be honest, I saw a better dressed and more diversified group of people at my high school prom.

First - Memories of Good Oscars Past:

Best of last year.

Victoria Beckham is cool enough to not walk the red carpet, but show up looking like that to an after party.
Idol.

Met Ball. Not Oscars...but I loved the dress in Sofia Coppola's Miss Dior Cherie commercial.
The new Natalie Portman one is awful.

This is my favorite Oscar dress of all time. It's perfect. She's perfect.

Oscars - the worst:

This looks like someone took rolls of Bounty and glued on seashells they found on the beach. Like a 1st grade craft project. And the shoes?

Is boring and looks cheap. Like something from Lane Bryant or Kohl's.

This looks like some of the old golf/tennis outfits I see the women wear back in Indiana. She looks so soccer mom, and the pony tail isn't helping.

I don't understand the dollie pasties, and the lace looks like something you would see in a retirement home.

And another arts and crafts project. Halle looks like an albino leopard that covered themselves in glue and jumped into glitter and tissue paper.

The ONLY good bits -

Gemma Ward.

The other day I was wondering what ever happened to Gemma Ward. She was one of the most successfull models, worth $3 by the time she was 20, and the youngest person to ever grace the cover of Vogue. Despite her success, I never really followed her career. Natalia Vodianova forever&ever. Anyways.

The other day I had no better thing to do than wonder "whatever happened to Gemma Ward?" I hadn't seen her editorials or in Vogue...for like two years. So rather than googling it, I turned to my friends and asked on facebook. Three seconds later, I got replies that she had gotten fat...and that everyone was really devastated because they loved her.

Well here she is now:

I think many of the models these days are too thin, but will maybe be one of the last people to join the "every body is beautiful" campaign. I think her small frame makes her look bloated, and she just looks unhealthy. Also, I wonder what could you eat to get that fat. Like, five big macs and a cake for a meal? Don't you feel disgusting after awhile? That being said, if she is happy it's her life choices not mine. And of course, eating caviar is so much better than starving yourself. But when I look at her, her eyes look so sad. Apparently, she is no longer returning to modeling. I wonder if she feels regret for abandoning her career in the pursuit of being able to pig out. So sad, she is so young. She could have gained weight for sure, but everything in moderation.

Akira: Live Action-Fail.

I feel like slapping a few people around in Hollywood right now. One of the best movies of all time, and the number one anime film of all time, Akira, is going back to the silver screen. But this time, the film will take place with live action, and worse the story will be retold with an all white cast.

What? The story takes place in NEO-TOKYO? Shouldn't the parts go to some well-deserving, underrepresented Asian actors, rather than the smoothie James Franco? Isn't it raciest to exchange the characters for a different ethniticy in the "hopes" of gainin a wider box office audience? It's like saying "I'm sorry Asian community, you are not good enough to act as Tokyo-dwelling citizens. Only white Americans suffice." Perhaps the storywriters are entertaining the idea to relocate the city to Neo-Chicago or something, but that would loose the essence of the amine. The city backdrops and filters into the plot line beautifully. Would you move the story of Casablanca to Toronto? NO. It wouldn't work. It would be like exchanging "San Fransisco" in Bladerunner for a beach.

I think, in the end, it's that Hollywood feel the need to remake the movie which hurts me the most. It's a spectacular anime, moving it to live-action cheapens it. The heart of the film lies in the rough sketches and color scheme. The movie already has a cult-following, so why change that? I hate how producers are constantly trying to rework classics to gain money. Even worse, is when they give the remake is given a half-assed job; they hired the Houghes brothers? As if Book of Eli really was a good movie...Wasn't it bad enough that there is a new Gatsby movie on the way? I always pictured Jay Gatsby as a clean faced who knew how to wash his hair, but with Leonardo DiCapro taking the role I guess I got that one wrong.

Why can't Hollywood respect the classics? Is money really that important? NO. Go make another Twilight movie if you need cash that bad. Or make the 3280 Shrek.

Just leave well enough alone. Thanks.

We are confident enough not to expect anything from Valentine's Day. It would have been sort of pathetic and needy, since I can really see Joachim anytime. It was spent at Best of Bento.
Joachim didn't like the fur hat until the Best of Bento man approved.

I tend to look at models for style inspiration and beauty tips more than anything else. The people I'm close to know that I love Sasha Pivovarova, I stalk her out all the time and follow a lot of what she does. I think she is gorgeous and funny. It's pretty hard to dislike someone how has a face like that and also likes to do Kung Fu and drink oolong tea.

Plus, she also seems smart, she was majoring in art history at the Russian University for the Humanities, when her friend (now husband!) took pictures of her and sent it to IMG. His works have been displayed in Paris, New York, featured on CNN, and she is collaborating with Miuccia Prada and Unkle Karl (Karl Lagerfield...) on pictures books.

I think this dress is Armani, but it's from a couple years ago, so I can't quite remember. I love the dress though, I love anything shiny. I like how she is all sexed up without too much hair product or makeup, a la Blake Lively.

I love this. I love it because I love aviator jackets, and have been eyeing them with envy for ages. I like the buckles, her one randomly painted nail and her makeup. And I love her hair, but that's maybe because it's similar to my own messy hair, just crazier.

Fashion Inspiration

I'm in UW's fashion club, I was asked to do it by my friend (one of the co-leaders) though honestly, I am the least fashionable person there! Everyone seems to have furs and turbans ... and I am so standard. As much as I would like to refurnish my wardrobe with Allsaints (Antigone boots!) I can't until I find some sort of job. Okay. So I may not be as glamorous or beautiful as the Dior models. Obviously.
But my hair is being featured in a Chinese hair magazine? I know, big time right. Next thing you know Miu Miu would be sending me free stuff to advertise on my blog and I will get free trips to Morocco.

Omg... I so wishIt's like a cupcake.

But you know maybe it's sort of cool. Because, you know the hair magazines just fly off the drugstore shelf here in America. And my hair is very similar to the average Chinese girl. It's because my hair stylist is being featured, and I am one of the looks or something that is going in the article. So I got my picture taken and everything, which was sort of embarrassing. I don't have the picture, but I remembered to take one when I got back. The issue is, I look like a dead or very stupid cow. I almost blurred out my face, so all the attention could be on the money (my hair...) but that would just be as equally embarrassing. So forget my stupid expression, I felt like an idiot enough taking a picture of myself, glamoring it up would only make it worse. Here it is:
